The net amount of something is the gross amount produced minus the cost. For example, in glycolysis, an activation energy of 2 Adenosine Triphosphate is used to create 4 ATP. The gross amount of ATP produced is 4, while the net amount is 2 ATP. A net gain is an overall gain, a net loss is an overall loss.
